Trainers and facilitators play a vital role in social movements – helping people to gain the clarity and skills they need to make change in the world.

Plan to Win is offering a 2.5 day train-the-trainer workshop for people keen to facilitate and educate in social movement contexts.

The workshop will focus on developing skills to run effective and engaging activist training sessions and be an entry into an ongoing network. It’s open to people who have experience both as activists (campaigners, organisers, community advocates, and all the many and varied kinds of activism) and with group process (facilitating meetings, decision making, training, team-building etc).

The workshop will be cofacilitated by Karrina Nolan and Holly Hammond. Holly and Karrina are committed change agents with extensive experience, complementary skills, and a fun and dynamic cofacilitation relationship. See below for more information about the trainers.

The 2.5 days will include:

  • sharing stories about activist training in many different contexts
  • exploring different approaches to education
  • exploring dynamics around power and diversity in groups
  • techniques for building the group to support learning
  • tips for designing empowering experiential workshops
  • facilitation practice and trouble-shooting common challenges

Come prepared to stretch yourself, leave ready to put what you’ve learnt into action.

Timing and location

12th – 14th February 201:

  • 5:00 – 7:30pm Friday evening;
  • 9:30 – 6:00pm Saturday;
  • 9:30 – 5:00pm Sunday afternoon

Interstate participants are very welcome.

Fees and inclusions

Fees are on a sliding scale of $200-$400 per person for the full workshop ie $200 for low income individuals and participants from unfunded organisations and up to $400 for participants from organisations with a solid financial base.

Pay the Rent: Free places in this workshop are available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Please note Friday evening snacks and morning and afternoon tea are included but lunch is not – BYO or buy from nearby. There will be an optional dinner on the Friday evening to meet other participants. A collection of training resources and further reading will be provided.

About the trainers

Karrina Nolan
KN SydneyKarrina is a descendant of the Yorta Yorta people. She’s an activist, organiser and community educator and facilitator with over 20 years experience working for social justice. She’s led programs and campaigns on women’s rights, globalisation and environmental justice with a focus on First Nations peoples.

Karrina has developed and delivered community cultural development programs in remote and regional Aboriginal and Torres Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, working with young people to develop confidence and pride to talk up their issues. She was Oxfam’s National Manager of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples program, and supported hundreds of women to be effective and strategic change makers.

Karrina has recently received a Churchill Fellowship focussed on First Nation’s women’s capacity to influence decisions and be engaged in community business. She is also undertaking a scholarship with the University Of Sydney’s Social Justice Network researching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities capacity for self-determination in the context of economic development.

She is currently a consultant working with her people and a range of NGO’s and communities.

Holly Hammond
HH_GoldenHolly Hammond is Plan to Win’s founder, director and principal facilitator and trainer. She is also the founder and co-convenor of the Melbourne Campaigners’ Network and Plan to Thrive.

Holly has twenty-five years of experience in social movements, including ten years focused on supporting movements through facilitation, training and mentoring. She has provided training and facilitation services for a broad range of Australian campaigning organisations, from small grassroots groups to large NGOs.

Holly is a curriculum developer and teacher of the Graduate Certificate in Community Advocacy, a formal qualification in community organising and campaigning now in its third year. In 2013 she worked as part of an international team of trainers to deliver 350.org‘s Global Power Shift in Turkey. She was part of the Training for Change team that ran a Training for Trainers prior to GPS and convened the Media and Communications workshop track throughout the event.

Holly has completed the ‘Super T’ training of trainers by Training for Change (Toronto, 2006), Center for Story Based Strategy’s Advanced Practitioner’s Training (California, 2011), ACTU’s Organising Foundations, Open Space Technology facilitation training, and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Later this year she will travel to Europe to research activist health and wellbeing projects.

Holly Hammond and Karrina Nolan have cofacilitated workshops for 350.org Australia, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network, and a movement gathering convened by Naomi Klein focused on forging coalitions inspired by This Changes Everything.

Over the last year Holly and Karrina have worked intensively with AYCC and Seed including two train-the-trainer workshops and three residential Climate Leader’s retreats where they were lead facilitators covering diverse training content and supporting a team of trainers.
