About Strategy and Soul and Daniel Hunter

Strategy and Soul is the riveting David versus Goliath story of the campaign against Philadelphia casino development.

Strategy comes to life in the heat of this massive fight. The story of the campaign is now providing lessons for other movements around the world, showing what it takes to overpower billionaires and corrupt officials for a cause you believe in.

Written by an experienced and unusually self-reflective direct action organizer, this book might be the most enjoyable way you’ve ever empowered yourself to change the world. Daniel Hunter is a trainer with Training for Change where he trains activists in experiential methodology and campaign strategy. He’s sought all over the world for his expertise at direct action training, from training Canadian postal workers union, to Quaker-based groups fighting mountaintop removal, to international climate activists at Global Power Shift. He has been published in We Have Not Been Moved: Resisting Racism and Militarism in 21st Century America and in Beautiful Trouble: A toolbox for revolution.

I read Strategy & Soul in 2013 and have been recommending it to everyone with an interest in campaigning and organising. The first person narrative gives the book immense power. You become immersed in the fight against casinos, while also having a birds-eye view of the campaign, and access to the insights of the author, Daniel Hunter, who never misses a teachable moment. – Anita Tang, Cancer Council NSW

A treasure trove of creative actions with a thrilling plot for activists of all stripes! – Andy Bichlbaum, the Yes Men

We’re extremely grateful to Daniel Hunter for writing this important book, and for joining being a part of our discussion and strategy workshop.

Read reviews, an excerpt from the book, and reflections from Australian activist Anita Tang.
